The featured Grand Challenge here is "advancing personalized learning," that is, allowing students of all ages and from diverse geographical locations learn at their own pace and focus on the parts of their own understanding that are incomplete, instead of being forced to learn at a pace deemed appropriate by someone who does not know the student personally. Khan Academy advances personalized learning by providing lectures of various subjects on a public database and providing corresponding exercises to enhance understanding of the material. Khan Academy tracks a student's progress over time and uses data generated from the exercises to highlight potential problems and show teachers where a student might need help. Khan Academy has a simple yet audacious mission statement: "to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere." Anywhere with Internet access, that is.

Mapping the contours of a penny fascinated me because previously, I had seen MATLAB as merely a particularly and sometimes difficult to use calculator. This demonstration allowed me to see the power of what matrices could be used for beyond crunching numbers. I was astonished at MATLAB's ability to connect a series of numbers and the concept of the matrix to an actual image.

About Me

My name is Eeyi Oon. I am an extremely peculiar mix of Peranakan and Southern. This leads to the linguistic quirk of saying both "Aiya!" and "doggone," sometimes in the same sentence. I am a freshman in the Pratt School of Engineering, and officially undecided (electrical/computer engineering intent). I do not plan to double major and wish I could dance.

Name Pronunciation

EE as in pEEk. Y as in Yellow. I as in Igloo. Oon as in "moon" without the "m".
