About Me
I am from Austin, Texas, and currently a Freshman at Duke University in the Pratt School of Engineering.
Name Pronunciation
My name is pronounced as it looks: Grant McHorse
Academic Intentions
I am intrigued by the fields of Biomedical Engineering, Global Health, Public Policy, as well as the physical sciences.
Other Interests
I am interested in pursuing a pre-med track, while also becoming involved in DukeEngage, Engineers for International Development, and other pre-health groups. Outside of the classroom my interests include baseball, basketball, and being outdoors.
Grand Challenges for Engineering
Engineering Better Medicines,National Academy of Engineering, accessed 26 August 2014 (Grand Challenge). Many of the Grand Challenges involving medicine are very interesting to me, especially the desire to design personal medications, based on a patient's genetic code.
The Role of Public Health Informatics Thomas G. Savel, MD, Seth Foldy, MD, CDC, 27 July 2012, 26 August 2014, (Grand Challenge).
Along similar lines to Engineering Better Medicines, advancing Health Informatics is another grand challenge that would provide a significant improvement in healthcare.
Biological approaches for addressing the grand challenge of providing access to clean drinking water Mark R Riley, Charles P Gerba, Menachem Elimelech, NCBI, 31 March 2011, 26 August 2014 (Grand Challenge).
MATLAB Demos
Among the MATLAB demo's, I found the Array Indexing demo and the 2-D plotting demo to be most helpful. These addressed topics that we are working with in class as of now, and provided further insight and understanding into how to operate MATLAB to carry out the commands and calculations that I need completed.
My favorite demo presented was the Earth's Topography demo. This demo quickly created a topographical view of the Earth's surface, beginning with loaded data and concluding with generating a graph depicting the Earth as a sphere with topographical shading. This demo, as well as many others, revealed MATLAB's processing power, and left me curious as to the other capabilities of MATLAB. Other demos that I found interesting were the Game of Life app, the Traveling Salesman app, and the 3-D drawing app, because of their interactive nature.
