the demo i enjoyed the most was the"Getting Started with MatLab tutorial" on the web address, file:////opt/matlabR2012a/toolbox/matlab/demos/html/GettingStartedwithMATLAB.html

This is because, as a beginner it helps me to run different tasks on matlab, from simple algebraic operations(summation , subtraction, multiplication and division) of letters (with numbers assigned to them) to graphing polynomial functions and matrices and arrays. All others are interesting and helpful, but the one which generally gives me the introduction and a broad scope of what matlab can do is the Getting "Started with MatLab tutorial" demo.
