Hi, this is Helen Zou's home page! For those of you who already read those introduction things, I'm the tallest Asian girl you can find - at least from what I've seen. I probably won't be doing much to this website aside from this intro but hi to everyone who reads it!

Lab 2: Grand Challenges article Engineering Better Medicine, One Bead at a Time, Dawn Hibbard, Kettering University, created 08 August 2003, accessed 25 August 2009 (Grand Challenge)

Basically, the article is about creating beads out of bone cement, a material that the body already accepts. By mixing antibodies into beads of bone and then inserting multiple beads on a string, doctors can target areas of the body that have soft tissue damage. The slow leaching process of the antibodies into the human body allow the damaged muscle to avoid infection. Engineering came into play in designing the size and shape of the bead. After several tests, it was concluded that a large surface area (created by many small beads that are football-shaped as opposed to spherical) helps release the most amount of antibodies into the damaged area. This is all a part of the Engineer Better Medicines Grand Challenge because in this example, engineering was able to help make inserting antibodies to prevent infection more effective and more localized.
