Grand Challenges For Engineering Link

[Making Personalized Medicine a Reality], Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News, Updated 1 January 2008, accessed 30 August 2011 (Grand Challenge)

This article provides an argument for the financial and public health benefits of creating more personilzed medicines based on an individual's genotype, as opposed to the current pharmaceutical model of mass marketing one variation of a drug to many different people, which increases the risk that some people will recieve it for whom that variation may not work as well or, worse may cause harm.

My Favorite Demo

My favorite demo was Loma Prieta Earthquake Demo. I enjoyed this demo because it, while it did not show some of the more complex imaging capabilities of MATLAB like some of the other demos, it still demonstrated how useful even some of MATLAB's most basic imaging capabilities can be. I was very impressed by how versatile this imagaging capability be with some relatively simple manipulation data arrangement. In fact, because I hadn't notice the "Run in Command Window" button at the top of the MATLAB Help page for the first couple demos, I decide to type out all of the code used for this earthquake demo in the command window myself. Having done that, This demo helped me realize that, while it will take some time to master the MATLAB programming language, given how useful and powerful MATLAB imaging can be, it is relatively easy to generate impressive graphics using this software.
