My favorite demonstration was the 'Viewing a Penny' under the Graphics folder because it bridged something so esoteric like MATLAB with something so common like a penny. I found it interesting because it used a scientific spin on something that I see and use everyday. Next time I have to pay at the grocery store and whip out a penny, I will remember the shading and colormap commands.
