My name is pronounced the way it looks. BRI-an with an emphasis on the first syllable and HOP-kins with an emphasis on the first syllable, like Anthony or Johns Hopkins.

Grand Challenge Article

"Provide access to clean water," one of the Grand Challenges for Engineering set forth by the National Academy of Engineering presents unique opportunities and obstacles. Many organizations have developed ways to purify water from an unclean source, but they have yet to determine ways to implement such systems or examine the social implications of providing clean water. One example of an organization committed to solving the problem is Water Missions International, located in Charleston, SC which developed a fairly portable system for purifying water from rivers and streams too contaminated for human consumption. While their systems solve the delivery problem, they remain concerned for the safety of groups with the purification system. In countries without potable water, such a device would be worth killing for, and they must take such social implications into account when delivering their systems. The problem remains an issue that we can and will solve as technologies for developing purification systems and delivering them continue to improve. MATLAB Demos

The demos of the Earth's Topography and Images of the Penny showed unique applications of general MATLAB principles. In particular, the Penny demo created a 3D image of a penny using many lines and indenting them according to a penny mold. This is a great way of showing how MATLAB can be used to create representations of objects which we can then manipulate to solve engineering problems.
