This page is meant to help in getting grading done on Gradescope.

Starting Up

  • Log into Gradescope at https://www.gradescope.com/
  • Click on the class for which you will be grading; this will bring you to the class dashboard
  • If the assignment is recent enough, it will be listed on the Active Assignments; if not, you will need to click Assignments in the left nav menu to see all the assignments
  • Click the assignment you want to grade
    • The assignment will generally be broken up into problems. You will receive an email assigning you particular problems or the rubric will have the parts assigned (more on the rubrics below). Click on the name of the problem you want to grade - do not click on the Submissions link that pops up when you hover over the link
      • You will be taken to the first ungraded entry for the problem.
      • Please read Gradescope's page on grading, starting with the Grading with rubrics section. We use List View, so skip anything about Grid View. Also:
        • Please do not make changes to rubric descriptions or points captures, as that will change things for everyone! If there is an item that is just right for your situation, you can use it; otherwise, make a new item with the Add Rubric Item button
        • The easiest way to use a rubric item is:
          • Make sure the rubric item you want to use exists; if it does not, add it first
          • Make sure the hand cursor option is chosen; if your cursor is in the grading area, there will be a menu at top right that shows the cursor options; the hand if the far left.
          • Double-click near the area where there is a mistake; you will either see a list of rubric items or comments, depending on the last thing you entered
            • Make sure the rubric list is active, then pick the appropriate rubric item
            • After that item has been added, you should add a comment under it to explain the problem. Note that once you enter a comment you will be able to re-use it on other papers, so if there is an explanation that you think you need to give several times, they will be stored.
            • Be sure to only use any rubric item once! If you need to take off multiple times for the same things, you will need to make a new rubric item for each - you may want to append something like (2x) (3x) after the rubric item
        • There should be a Correct rubric item - if the answer is fully correct, be sure to select that or the item will be considered ungraded
        • When you are done adding rubric items for a given entry, you can hit Next Ungraded or the Z button (keyboard shortcut for next item)
    • When you are done grading all of one problem, you will go back to the assignment page. If you are only grading some of the entries for a particular problem, you can get back to the assignment page using the Grade Submissions link in the left nav bar (you may need to hover over the circles or extend the menu with the Show Menu option, which is the $$\equiv\gt$$ icon near the top of the nav bar.
