Engineering Grand Challenges

[[1]], Knovel.com, Knovel Corporation, Published 1 May 2008, Accessed 9 September 2012

This article delves into some current progress being made in developing a nuclear fusion energy reactor, and how further research into the theoretical workings of the plasma within the reactors could lead to profound insights on their behavior that could be the breakthrough that finally makes fusion feasible.

Matlab Demonstrations

My favorite Matlab demonstration was the Loma Prieta Earthquake demonstration, since the demonstration showcases just how useful Matlab can be in scientific analysis (even though I have no idea how to read the data/analysis). It actually makes me really excited because it shows how strongly Matlab can complement scientific inquiry and how simple and useful it is in storing data sets, manipulating data points, analyzing numbers, and producing graphical aides - all of which can be a exceedingly tedious to accomplish other means. If Matlab can do science in other disciplines as well as it can in analyzing earthquake data, I'll have to pay really close attention in class to make sure I don't miss a single potential application of the software.

I also enjoyed the Traveling Salesman and Game of Life demonstrations because I suck at discrete math and enjoy games of all kinds, and because they intrigued me as to the depth and potential of the Matlab programming environment.
